Senior Practice Manager

XXIV Old Buildings is seeking an ambitious, highly experienced, and dynamic Senior Practice Manager to join our clerking team. This is a crucial leadership role, reporting to the Senior Clerk and Deputy Senior Clerk and overseeing a dedicated group of barristers.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing a first-class clerking service, driving practice development, leading a junior clerking team, and contributing to the overall strategic success of Chambers. This is a hands-on position requiring exceptional commercial acumen, managerial skills, and a deep understanding of barristers’ practices and legal business development.

 

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Practice Management: Proactively managing and developing the practices of your group, including complex fee negotiation, brief allocation, and diligent diary and work-in-progress oversight.
  • Team Leadership: Taking direct responsibility for the performance, training, and development of junior clerks and practice assistants within your assigned group.
  • Business Development: Actively identifying and executing opportunities to grow barristers’ practices through client relationships, marketing contribution, and internal strategy.
  • Operational Excellence: Ensuring adherence to all clerking standards, quality systems, and regulatory requirements
  • Senior Support: Acting as an ambassador for Chambers and providing essential cover and support to the Senior Clerk and Deputy Senior Clerk during periods of absence.

 

The Ideal Candidate Will:

  • Possess prior experience as a Senior Practice Manager/Team Leader or significant prior experience as a practice manager in a barristers’ chambers.
  • Demonstrate strong commercial and financial acumen, particularly in fee negotiation and billing processes.
  • Be a proven team leader, motivator, and developer of junior staff.
  • Have outstanding interpersonal skills, capable of building effective relationships with clients, barristers, and all members of the administration team.
  • Be highly organised, proactive, and meticulous in administrative and diary management.
