Our EDI Committee at XXIV Old Buildings is committed to the promotion of an inclusive culture within Chambers, and further details on a number of initiatives that we support can be found below.
As a Chambers we are committed in taking positive steps to improve access to the Bar, especially for under-represented groups and aim to improve racial diversity within Chambers and across the profession. We are delighted to support The Black Talent Charter, COMBAR Mentoring Scheme. Our anti-racist statement can be found here.
Chambers supports the COMBAR Mentoring Scheme where several members providing a series of one-to-one mentoring sessions for under-represented groups to encourage those who are under-represented at the English Bar and in particular the Commercial Bar to pursue careers as barristers. Individual members also provide mentoring through Lincoln’s Inn Mentoring Scheme.
We support The Black Talent Charter which strives for equality of opportunity and nurturing of Black talent and are active members of the 10,000 Black Interns Programme, which provides training and development opportunities for the Black community through placements and mentorship.
We are a proud signatory of a number of initiatives that aim to support the progression of female barristers into senior roles and gender parity across the profession such as: The ChBA Charter for Fairness, ERA Pledge (Equal Representation in Arbitration).
The ChBA Charter for Fairness aim is to achieving fairness in work allocation, career development, marketing and earnings for female barristers in a meaningful way. The ERA Pledge seeks to increase, on an equal opportunity basis, the number of women appointed as arbitrators to achieve a fair representation with the ultimate goal of parity.
The values that underpin our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion can be found in our internal policies that are reviewed and updated annually, or when new legislation and best practice is released.
In accordance with the Bar Standards Board Handbook all members, staff and pupils were given the opportunity to respond to a data diversity questionnaire in May 2023. The purpose of the BSB rules is to provide transparency concerning recruitment and employment activities and to encourage an independent, strong, diverse and effective legal profession.
